The potential for this to play an important roll in the File Manager. Specifically being able to “Force-tag” files based on thier _file_ type. Think of it, like the metadata returned by the file program, each file is tagged with that file type.

Hey I'm writing a diploma thesis about a tagging system with semantic web features. Look at http://esw.w3.org/topic/ConTag. Perhaps we can do some knowledge sharing. I will have a look in yout tagging libraries.

If you can show that xattrs really provide a useful advantage without adding a huge amount of code, sure. Having thought it through and listened to various arguments, both Chip & I are pretty well convinced that xattrs aren't worth the trouble. Code would go a lot further towards convincing us than talk.

Great. So if I took the time to implement a solid xattr backend, would you consider it for inclusion?

I have no intentions of adding extended attribute support in the near future. I understand the reasons that a couple of people want this, but it's not on my roadmap and not something I will be implementing any time soon. I have too many other things to be concerned about in this project and others, and to be honest, I haven't agreed with all the arguments made. While we're not ruling it out completely, don't expect any xattr support any time soon.
